He Finishes!
Both A.G. Bell and Elisha Gray filed for their patent on the same day, February 14, 1876; but Bell finished just two hours before Gray did. Gray had not been able to master the transmitter until Bell had(Great Idea Finder). Above is Bell's telephone patent. According to Bell, the first intelligible conversation was between him and his assistant, Watson, in a another room, "Come here, Watson, I want you."
After all of the celebrations, Bell came to found the first telephone company, Bell Telephone Company (later AT&T).
The first telephone system, known as an exchange, which is a practical means of communicating between many people who have telephones, was installed in Hartford, Connecticut in 1877, and the first exchange linking two major cities was established between New York and Boston in 1883(Great Idea Finder).
Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. His education was largely received through numerous experiments in sound and the furthering of his father’s work on Visible Speech for the deaf. Bell worked with Thomas Watson on the design and patent of the first practical telephone(Biography.com).
Early Life
Alexander was the son of Alexander Melville Bell and Eliza Grace Symonds Bell. He had two brothers who both died of tuberculosis. Bell was home schooled by his mother, who instilled in him an infinite curiosity about the world around him. He received one year of formal education in a private school and two years at Edinburgh's Royal High School. Though a mediocre student, he displayed an uncommon ability to solve problems. At age 12, while playing with a friend in a grain mill, he noted the slow process of husking the wheat grain. He went home and built a device with rotating paddles with sets of nail brushes that dehusked the wheat. It was his first invention(Biography.com).
